Costume and Props for our film

As you can see the leather face character where no colour full cloths which are raged and cut to show that he does not care about his looks. We will be going for blacker look to be more symbolic. This is as black show evil and a dark side to life and also death as you are lower to the darkness. Leatherface is one of the scariest and most famous horror villains of all time, we are thinking we would like to have the same impact on our audience, so using a example of leatherfaces costume was appropriate.

Killer’s costume-

Black hoody (For the villain) – The Reason we wanted to use black because it show connotes evil dark and also secretive. We are hoping to use a hood this will hide the identity so the audience will not be able to relate to the killer as they can not see his face. This will also make him more mysterious and we believe that a bit of mystery is important for our character.

Black trousers (For the villain) –

The black trouser are being used for the same reason as the black hoody. It will also mean that he can hide in the darker places easier, this could mean that we could the actor using this costume the ability to hide in a area and suddenly appear to come out of nowhere.

Victim costume –

These cloths are very fitting for the girl as they are semi country with semi fashion for that 70’s era. It is also very symbolic as it is red to show dander and then white to show a nice person with no dark side.
She also has a skirt which makes her seem more open and easy to talk to. This is also out of a horror film

Basic cloths –

We will be using cloths like this as the white and red cloths as they symbolise different things to black. White represent calm and also very contemporary. The red represents that the girl is in danger and she is normally sexy.

The killer’s weapon –
We though he will have knife as a weapon, Knifes are used in many horror and thriller films like in Vacancy. A knife symbolises more of an assassin type of killing as it is silent and also it can cause more of a pain full death as the killer can stab the victim where he want from the foot to the head. Stabbing some one in the leg would be more horror type kill as the killer would make it more painful and really slow death

casting

Casting

Killer Character – We are 99% certain we will be Using Jamie Fisher as our killer character who is going to be called The Hooded Figure. But as he had a busy schedule we drafted in Jacob O’Shea. His has a similar build to Jamie which is tall and Thin but muscular. Tall characters are very good as they look dominate and they can overpower people lot easier. Also by him being a thin build muscular build he has a mussels so he seem fit so he will not get tired so he will not fail in the quest of stacking Grace.

Female Character – We are not that certain who we will be using Grace Birchill. She is a typical blond girl so she seems vulnerable and also defenceless as she is going to be stacked while she is alone. She is also short so it emphases the fact that she is vulnerable.

Other characters – We should not be using anyone else but we might just have a few local people in the film as they go around doing there day to day life. We would like to have no one in our film because that would create a better atmosphere and at would give the allusion of isolation and desolation.

Sound

Sound

Sound is a very important part of any movie production, if the sound isn’t right it can really spoil the film. There are two types of sound:

Diegetic:

This is sound that comes from sources within the film for example, the sound of a bird in a cage. It’s sound that hasn’t been placed onto the film whilst the editing took place.

Non – Diegetic:

This is sound that has been placed over the original film and the source can’t often be seen for example, the sound of a dog barking in a housing estate.

Music

The type of music is going to play a huge part in our production. Using something that is up beat and energetic isn’t going to have the same affect as something that has an eerie and mysterious feel.

It’s high likely that we will be placing Non Diegetic sound over our production. Typical sounds can be placed over during the chase scene like a dog barking as the two characters run to the playing field.

For Diegetic sound there will also be emphasis on footsteps, when the killer walks around the house with camera shots of his feet, say walking up the stairs and the sound of his footsteps quiet but emphasized in a way that gives the viewer an intense feeling.

Editing

Editing

I have comprised a small video to show some simple transitions that can be used in our production, it will be posted on our blogs but here is the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPJl-F2o_7o
Transitions
Transition One, Fade: The most basic transition, it’s so simple and effect that I think it works the best out of all the transitions. It provides a nice smooth change between a scene. It would work best with a calm scene rather that a fast paced action scene.

Transition Two, Dissolve: Another simple transition but one at which I feel doesn’t work very well at all. It gives the film a crude, patchy and unprofessional feel.

Transition Three, Wipe Wide Down: This transition would be good to show a new day. It feels like it wipes everything clean. It would be used to show different times of days.

Transition Four, Page Curl: This one is also like Wipe, it feels as if it should be used to show a new beginning or change in time.

Transition Five, Inset: Personally I would not use this transition it feels very unprofessional. The transition feels too blocky.

Transition Six, Flip: This transition I could see being used in the title or credits bit not within the actual video clip itself.

Transition Severn, Bars: This one I feel is the worst of the lot, it feels so very unprofessional and doesn’t work well as a transition at all.

Case Study Tell No One

Case Study

Part i

The film I am doing this case study on is the thriller film Tell No One. Tell No One was directed Guillame Canet and the production company for this film was Les Productions du Trésor. In the United Kingdom it was realised on the 15th of June 2007 and it was filmed in France which added authenticity as the film was set in France. It took $17 million in its first four weeks in the French box office and t has grossed $33,385,185 since then worldwide from the box office.
Part ii

After watching this film I think that the target audience for this film is a more mature audience, this is in two way first of all I think all of the twists and turns in the movie make it so people too young to watch the film will not understand what is going on and find it very hard to enjoy the film as it will be too confusing. As well as the fact that most films are in English and this film is in French, this will put off many viewer that almost can’t be bothered to read the subtitles, this would suggest an audience of a older age, I would suggest that target audience for this film is about 17-40 year olds.

Part iii

New technology has definitely helped in the way that a target audience can be informed of this film much quicker than they could have been in the past. The internet was very useful when looking up this film, websites like Wikipedia and IMBD had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast, the production company and further information that was relevant to this case study.

Part iv

There was a variety of different camera shots presented in the Film Tell No One. The most notable was the point of view shot. This was utilized well in one scene and really added some atmosphere for the thriller movie. IT was a mixture of sound, lighting, environment and camera movement that worked really well here. The sound was all digetic and really gave a sense of realism, because we could hear the footsteps of the person that the camera was following and then we can hear a scream, this with no non-digetic sound whatsoever really gave a quite scary environment as it allowed the viewer to fully concentrate on what was happening directly in front of them. The camera angle and movement was spectacular as it really made it look like the camera was actually the man, they did this by jogging the camera ever so slightly this really allowed a sense of actually going in the man’s footsteps. The lighting also added a thrilling type of effect to the scene as it was dark in the room with a few lights only slightly illuminating the environment they are in, this was supposedly done so the viewer would wonder who or what is hiding in the dark? The environment for this shot was also very effective as it was in a barn this with the lighting gave quite a scary environment, this was further done as the camera looked on each of the horse boxes individually this was good as it built up suspense and made the viewer anxious to find out who was going to be in the last horse box? All of these factors together gave a very effective seen that built tension for the viewer.

There is also a variety of different locations in the film it varied from the deep in the city, to far out by a lake in the countryside. This variety of what seemed to be never ending different locations was good as it kept the viewer interested as they were not stuck with just one boring location throughout the film. One of the more effective locations was the lake in the country. This was because this location seemed very quiet, but it almost seemed to quiet and when it got to night time it might have given the viewer the impression that anything could be lurking in the dark, and if one of the characters got separated it might be the last time that we see that certain character.

There was also a good variety of character types in the film. An example of one of the characters was the good guy who has been falsely accused and finds himself on the wrong side of the law. This was an effective main character for the film as he is a nice guy who has fallen on hard times in recent years and it appears a sinister plot has put him in trouble. This allowed the viewer to somewhat connect with him, as it seems at many points in the film that something bad will happen to him and the viewer goes onto the edge of their seat hoping that he will get away and his name will be cleared. This character ends up in trouble because he asks too many questions to something that he should be allowed to ask, this would probably leave the viewer feeling sorry for him as he in noi way deserves what is happening to him.

Another type of character is the lovable rouge. In this film the character has a bullish personality but his heart seems to be in the right place, this was good as the viewer was able to laugh at some of his more anger filled reactions to other characters. This character it seems is normally on the wrong side of the law, this character was effective for a thriller movie as he ended up in gun fights and ended up confronting the law numerous times, and it leaves the viewer wondering if he will survive this time around.

Another example of a character type is the main detective. This character is nearly always hot on pursuit of the main character and because of him the main character looks like he is going to be wrongly accused. Although he could be seen as the bad guy in films he is not really, because all he wants to do is find out the truth, this character is not deliberately trying to falsely accused the main character is it just all of the evidence points toward him. A character like this is good for a thriller movie as it allows the viewer to have nixed feeling about him as he is likable, but because of him the main character is in danger of being arrested for crimes he has not committed, this leaves the viewer guessing if this detective will ever find out the truth and actually eventually clear the main characters name from any crimes.

The costumes for the characters were good at helping establish character types. The best example of this is for the Bullish character that I mentioned earlier. This character wears typical cloths that you would associate with a thug. He wears items of clothing like track suit bottoms which both connotes he is laid back, and that possibly he cannot afford a better pair of trousers. He is also seen wearing a chain round his neck, this connotes that he likes to flaunt what he has got. Most importantly he is most commonly seen wearing just a vest on his top halve, this is used to show that this character likes to intimidate other people with how his body looks, because the vest top allows his arms to be fully on show. Also the colour of his tank top is black, black is normally used to show a bad character, but this is juxtaposed by is white track suit bottoms because this colour is commonly used to show a good character, this would suggest that with these two colours the viewer has to make up their own mind to whether this character is good or bad as he could be either.

The genre of this film is utilized in two main ways. The one that most endears it to being a thriller movie is the never ending twists and turn in the plot of the film. This was effective for a thriller as it really kept the viewer guessing what little tiny clues mean and what the importance of that character is, this was good as it would keep the viewer interested through the duration of the film because ultimately they want to find out what actually happened, and the twists and turns in the film do not stop until right at the end when all is revealed. This am sure kept viewers on the edge of their seats and was an effective part of this thriller movie.
Another effective part of this thriller movie was the chase scene which involved the main character getting chased by loads of police. This would have kept the viewer on edge as he has not done anything wrong to be chased.. This would give the viewer some empathy has they might feel well if I was being chased by loads of police when I have done nothing wrong I would ran away. It also is an effective way of thrilling the viewer as the viewer really does not want him to get caught, and when it looks like he may be caught the viewer might get anxious and then hope that he still gets away/

The narrative structure is not linear as it heavily depended on flash back, although all of the flashbacks were in chronological order as was the main storyline. This was used to keep the movie fast paced and intriguing. The flashbacks let the viewer really understand what happened in the past that lead up to these events, this was clever as it allowed the movie to flow but also made sure the viewer could understand what was happening, this meant to movie did not get too confusing and would keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
Part v

As far as stereotypical characters in the film goes, i believe that the partners of the olice officers are a old stereotype, as one of the officers is head strong and always want to catch the criminal without a second thought on the situation, while the other officer thinks it through more trying to make sure they do not react too quickly and arrested the wrong person. This works in the film as it gives a kind of sub plot with how their relationship works when they both help each other out in there area of expertise and also others some rather comical moments when they talk to each other. In conclusion in this film they are almost ying and yang, complete opposites but they need the other one to complete their potential.

Case study The Usual Suspects

Case Study

Part i

This case study is on the crime thriller the Usual Suspects. The usual Suspects was directed by Bryan Singer and the production company for this film was PolyGram Film Entertainment. The film was released in the UK on the 25th of august 1995 and it was filmed in various locations in New York. It has grossed $23,341,568 from the box office worldwide

Part ii

After watching I believe that the target audience for this film is massive, as it has elements to please almost anyone, it has gun fights to please your average teenager and has a very well written plot which will manage to immerse everyone else into the film story, and with so many twists and turns the whole audience will be left to the edge of the respective seats till the very end of the film. I believe that this film is accessible to all sexes and probably from anyone above the age of about 15.

Part iii

New technology has definitely helped in the way that a target audience can be informed of this film much quicker than they could have been in the past. The internet was very useful when looking up this film, websites like Wikipedia and IMBD had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast, the production company and further information that is relevant to this case study.

Part iv

IN this film the variety of camera shots was used to great effect. One of the very best shots comes in the first scene. This shot is made effective by the camera’s angle, the location of the shot, the lighting and the use of sound. The camera angle changed a few times during the scene, but two things were kept the same, when the camera was on the victim it was a high angle shot which made the victim look very small and very weak, and did the opposite when on the hunter in this scene as it was a low angle shot that made the villain of this scene look bigger and very string, to combination of this made it look like the victim of this scene had no chance of escaping from the villain. The lighting for the scene was also very effective, as it was very dark and as a viewer you could only just make out who was who this adds suspense to the scene as you do not really know what could be lurking the dark, the lighting was such that you could not see the face of the killer and he could have been anyone in the whole film. The location of the film is very clever because it is set on a boat at night, this leaves suspense as we can not quite tell what the boat is doing it could be anywhere this also adds some mystery to the scene and makes the viewer think well if the boat is out of the way how many people are going to survive the opening scene, also with the being on a boat there is a good chance that the killer will not be caught. The sound in the opening scene is largely dpendent on digetic sound, digetic sound is a good suspense builder and is also very good at establishing where the scene is set, one of the first things we can here is the sound of a fire burning, this suggest that there has possibly been an explosion, which suggests that there was some sort of gun fight not too long ago. There is also the sound of leaking water, and since this scene is set on a boat that could suggest that there is possibly a leak , this would also suggest that there has been some trouble on the boat, still the most effective piece if digetic sound in this scene is the slow measured footsteps of the main villain when he is walking over to his victim, the footsteps are the main thing we can hear and build up suspense in one main way, this is because we do not know who the footsteps belong to but you can almost get a sense of the confidence and self assurance of the man, this is because these footsteps sound as if he is walking with purpose knowing what he is going to do, but ultimately the viewer does not know who is walking as they can only hear is footsteps this makes him mysterious and this makes the viewer want to know who he is. All of these aspects helped make an enthralling opening scene witch set the pace for the rest of the film and would make the viewer want to know who the killer is?

The variety of the character types in the film is good. Still there are two character types in the film that really are what made this film effective as a thriller For example the character that we follow through the majority of the film is a crook that is being interrogated, and he is telling the cops his how he saw the events that have just recently unfolded. This character seems likable, almost so much that the viewer wonders how they are in for this crime. The character is also crippled on his left side and has to walk with a limp and look like that he cannot use his left arm for much, this could make the viewer almost feel sorry for him which also mean that with this limb he cannot be a suspect in the viewer eyes for any of the crimes in the film because he seems physically impossible of doing anything major that would affect other characters too much, but still there seems something sinister about him when certain things are said and he seems to almost change, this allows the viewer to get suspicious about him and his motives, and throughout the film allows the viewer to make up their own mind about him, these sort of questions are good for building up tension in thriller movies.

Another example of an effective character type was the mysterious villain. This characters indent in not actually revealed till right at the end of the film, even though we see him shoot someone right at the beginning. This sort of character is effective in a thriller movie because it adds lots of mystery to the plot, as he could be anyone of the characters we have already meet but could at the same time be someone completely different. This leaves a question for the viewer all the way through the film and allows them to guess who they think his real identity may be.

Some of the costumes in the film really added to the suspense and tension of it. The best costume in the film was of the killer in the very first scene, as he is wearing what looks like very smart cloths; smart black shoes a nice black over coat over his suit black trouser and a very smart black leather hat, this is almost business like and does that connate that he is very businesslike when it comes to killing people he has to kill. The hat also suggests that he is trying to cover his identity. All of his cloths are black in the opening scene, this suggested that he was the bad character as black as been the colour that has for a long time shown which characters are the ‘bad guys’, but also the black cloths manage to make him look mysterious in the first scene and manage to hide his identity, this adds tension for the viewer has they might be desperate to know who is this person who has just killed someone.

The use of the thriller genre in this film is utilized in the plot of the film and the narrative. This is because the movies story line is heavily dependent on flash back from one of the criminals story, this is the only account of what happened but we do not know if we can trust it as it is his side of the story, and the criminal might be trying to put the blame on other people whilst trying to clear his own name. This makes the viewer very suspicions of whether what we are seeing is the truth or not and makes the viewer wonder whether or not we can actually trust the main character both of these help adding tension to the movie. Also when something seemed like it was one thing it suddenly seems like something else and then does it again, and when one person seems like his the killer it then suddenly looks as if the killer is someone else, and it does this right until the end of the film.

Another effective part of the thriller genre in this film were all of the gun fights, and robberies, these were quite intense and must have thrilled most viewer by the way that so many people got shot and the main characters were in a lot of trouble most of the way through the gun fights. Most of the time their plans did not look like they were going to be successful, this put them in grave danger most of the time and it looked like they were not going to survive. The betrayals in the film were also effective as the viewer had no idea who they could and would they could not trust in the movie.

The narrative structure in the film was complex with flash back taking the viewer from the present and someone’s story of the past. This made the movie very interesting as the more that was revealed in one flashback the more question would arise about how is the present like it is, this meant that there were lots of twists in the plot and made sure that the viewer would be guessing all the way through the film about what is going to happen next. This also managed to make the story flow well as all of the boring parts about the past were not in the flashback and only key information that was needed to really understand the film was represented to the viewer, this allowed the movie the flow very well and gave it a nice fast paced. However this did mean that the viewer would really have to concentrate to fully understand what was going on.
The movie with all its plots became quite confusion at some parts but that even made it more interesting as it kept the viewer really involved by making them guess what was going to happen. I still believe however that this was very effective and strengthens the appeal of the film because of how the films narrative managed to keep the viewer hooked to the film until the very last scene and they will only really find out what is happening till the end of the film.

Part v

The big stereotype in the film is about someone who is crippled, this character walks with a limb and also can not used his left arm at all. This character in the film even though he is a crook is automatically not a suspect because he is crippled and he ‘could not’ do the all of the crimes. This in the film shows maybe that we overlook crippled people because we feel sorry for them, and that maybe we should treat them like everyone else and they should be suspects regardless of their condition.

Case Study Eastern Promises

Case Study

Parti

This case study is on the thriller film Eastern Promises. Eastern Promises was directed by David Cronenberg and was produced by Focus Features. The film was realised in the UK on the 26th of October 2007 and was filmed in Hackney London UK. The total gross income from this film in the box office is $56,105,902.

Part ii

I believe that the intended target audience for this film is probably young adults and older, this is strongly suggested with the 18+ rating of the film. With the amount of blood and gore in the film I believe that this film is targeted at a more mature audience.

Part iii
New technology has definitely helped in the way that a target audience can be informed of this film much quicker than they could have been in the past. The internet was very useful when looking up this film, websites like Wikipedia and IMBD had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast, the production company and further information that is relevant to this case study.

Part iv

One of the most notable of all the camera shots is in the scene when ‘Nikolia’ and ‘Kirill’ (The two Russian mobsters) are looking at a corps of someone recently deceased. The camera has been put in the box that the body has been stored in and is angled up at the two mobsters, this shot really gives a sense to the viewer of what it would be like to be stored in a cramped space like that and looking up at these two men, this is almost spine chilling as it almost puts us in the shoes of this guy who has been killed. This shot is also effective as it makes the two gangsters more intimidating as before, it also makes the viewer feel as if they are looking directly at us, this makes them seem more real and leaves us believing that perhaps these two are nastier than they seem because while looking at the corpse they are almost smiling these makes them seem very evil indeed.

The location this film was filmed at was Hackney in London. Hackney is a particularly rough borough and looks so in the film, this made it a good place to film a mobster movie, because all the street corners look like there could be something more sinister than it seems behind the walls of certain building, this suits a thriller movie and certainly worked for this particular film.

There was a good variety of character types in Eastern Promises. One example of a character type was the innocent good guy character who gets caught up with the gangsters ,It was probably her own fault because trying to do the right thing ended up with her in a fair bit of trouble. This was a good character type to have in a thriller movie because it brings innocence to the film and gives the viewer some sort of connection to her and leaves the viewer hoping that nothing bad happens to her, and when the viewer thinks something bad might actually happen to her they are on the edge of their seat hoping that nothing bad will happen in the end.

Another type of character in the film is the volatile gangster who is not really that bad but can go really over the top and do things he regrets without meaning to. A thriller film needs a character as unpredictable as this because it keeps the audience guessing and wondering what will he do next, because this unpredictability puts almost every singles character at risk.

A third character type portrayed in this film is the supposed bad guy that is still lovable to the viewer. This sort of character has certain traits and a personality that makes the viewer grow to like him even though he appears to put the main characters in danger on purpose. I found that this character type was very effective in this thriller movie, as we never really could understand his motives and never guess what he was going to do until right at the end, this sort of mysteries character gives the viewer mixed feeling about them but also makes a bit of a connection between the viewer and this character and leaves the viewers on the edge of their seats wondering what will this character will end up doing.

The costumes for the characters in this film were quite effective at setting the character type. All of the mobsters were wearing smart cloths that go with their line of work. Items of clothing like Sunglasses; these might be worn by the mobsters to keep there identity hidden or to keep a low profile. Leather Gloves could have been used to show that they will commit crimes and will not want their fingerprints left at the crime scene. The mobsters were also wearing suits, I think these suits were to show that they have a businesslike approach to their jobs and will stop at nothing to complete a task. Also the majority of the mobster’s cloths were black, the colour black has been the long time colour to represent evil or bad characters in films, and was used in this film to show supposed bad guys.

While the costume for the innocent good guy. This female characters wore a knitted jumper most of the time items of clothing like this connote innocence because of the softness and approachable appeal of how it looks, this jumper made the character look like a nice person who would not deliberately try to but any one on any sort of danger. It also made her look like an easy target and makes the viewer feel more protective over her because she does not look like she deserves to be hurt.

The genre is utilized in this film in a number of ways. The most notable is the amount of violence and how graphic the violence is. Some of the fight scenes make it look like one of the main characters is not going to survive and leaves the viewer almost nervous about this characters well being. There is also a lot of moments that would leave the viewer very disturbed by the amount of gore, an example of this is how graphic and realistic it looked when someone got there neck sliced open. Also the use of sound is very good at making the viewers heart rate pounding, as the scraping sound of the knife going across someone skin or the squelch when a knife is thrust into someone body makes the viewer feel that that was not special effect, almost giving a sense of realism making the viewer think that that actually happened.

The narrative structure for this movie is Linear as it is very chronological, and there are no flash backs what so ever, this allowed the movie to flow and kept a good pace, this did not allow the viewer to second guess anything because just when something seems to have been resolved another problem occurs almost instantly, this keeps the viewer guessing and wondering what is going to happen. Another thing that was very effective was that the film had two main points of views, one point of view from our innocent good guy, and one point of view from one of the supposed bad guys. I believe this was effective because although it allows the story to have more to it than if it had only followed one of these characters it does not pose too many characters problems to make it too confusing. This gave the film a nice flow to it and managed to allow us to understand both characters so we would not immediately condemn one of their actions without understanding why they did what they did what.

Part v

The mobsters are Eastern European. Every eastern European in the film seems to be involved with the gangsters or knows of their existence this is quite stereotypical as it is suggesting that all Eastern European people are hard and are either not trust worthy or not trusting as shown by two characters. One example is the mobsters in the film who are emotionless beings who will do what it takes to get the job done. While the other Eastern European character is a old Russian who is the uncle of the innocent good guy character in the film, he drinks a lot of Vodka (this in itself is stereotypical) he says harsh things to his family and also does not trust anyone, he decides to see the worst in people, this was used to show, I believe, the hardiness of Eastern European people and trying to suggest that these characters had a tough up bringing witch means they are how they are so they can survive.

Case Study RocknRolla

Case study

Part i

The I am doing this case study on is the crime/comedy/thriller called RocknRolla. RocknRolla was directed by Guy Ritchie, the production company for this film was Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed on location in London and its release date in the United Kingdom was September the 5th 2008. The initial box office return for the movie was fantastic, with the return being around £1.5 million in its first six days, the film has done very well since then as its overall gross profit from the box office has been $25,728,089.

Part ii

After watching the film I believe that the target audience would mostly consist of males, I believe this in the way the film represents males and females, by this I mean nearly all the characters are males, and there is only one female character that really has any input into the storyline. Also the film features a lot of stereotypical language aimed at some of the female character an example that crops up quite a lot in the film is tart, also with the film is mainly about the lives of male gangsters in London, I think all of these factors contribute to making this film aimed at a male audience.

From the IMBD data base for reviews I found that this movie largely had a very good audience review here is one example of a positive review which I have picked at random, (excuse the spelling mistakes in it).

52 out of 77 people found the following review useful:Guy Ritchie did it again, 14 October

After some failures in his career as a director, Guy Ritchie is back with a fast paced, frenetic movie. A film about a Russian mobster orchestrates a crooked land deal, millions of dollars are up for grabs, and all of London?s criminal underworld wants in on the action. Everyone from a dangerous crime lord to a sexy accountant, a corrupt politician and down-on-their-luck petty thieves conspire, collude and collide with one another in an effort to get rich quick. The story is interesting and the plot is very well developed. Its a film with lots of action and adventure, it has also a very good amount of black humor, characteristic from Ritchie's movies, and full of twists and an unexpected ending. The direction from Ritchie is excellent, the first hour might be a little slow but from the second hour till the end the movie takes a very fast rhythm and the fast forwards and slow motions increases the intensity of the movie. The cast is amazing, Gerard Butler gives a formidable performance, Thandie Newton also very good, Tom Wilkinson flawless as always and the secondary roles from Toby Kebbell (Johnny Quid), Idris Elba (Mumbles) and Mark Strong (Archie) gave the movie a very good support. In conclusion, RocknRolla is an entertaining movie you will enjoy and that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

As you can see from that review it is very positive and says how the movie is very good at keeping you on the edge of your seat, this is always a good aspect of any type of thriller movie. What makes this review particularly good is that well over half of the people that read this and gave positive feedback to it, this shows that many people believed this film to be good.

Part iii

New technology has definitely helped in the way that a target audience can be informed of this film much quicker than they could have been in the past. The internet was very useful when looking up this film, websites like Wikipedia and IMBD had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast, the production company and further information that is relevant to this case study.

Part iv

The first thing that i am going to do for this section is type up the notes i made from the first 3 minutes of the film this includes the opening credits. These notes are on two separate parts, first of all the opening credits and then the first scene. (These notes are now constructed into what I hope is proper English and not the original note form they were in when i was taking the notes.)
Opening credits:

Music: For the opening the music is well and truly RocknRoll, this is good in my opinion as it fits in wit the title and sets the tempo for the rest of the film. The music good suggest that the movie is going to be fast paced, entertaining and will probably have drugs and sex in the film at some point.

Colours: The two colours that feature in the title sequence are black and gold, these colours make each other stand out are and were useful when trying to show off a particular character trait. I noted that some particularly one of the character was almost fully shaded in black with only is rings and sunglasses in gold, I think this was to show that this particular character was the really bad one out of all the gangsters.

Sound: There is a voice over from a person with a real London accent, the voice over is from one of the gangsters, he has a proper London accent and seems to be very relaxed and self assured. The person who is talking describes to us what a real RocknRolla is, this suggest that he possibly sees himself as a real RocknRolla or possibly knows at least one real RocknRolla.

Transitions: The opening credits go through each of the characters very quickly without saying
who they are we get a clear picture of what they look like (the opening credits are animated). The transitions are very sharp and quick so we get through almost the whole cast in just a minute, between some of the transitions there is the sound of a gun clicking; I think this was only on one character though, and I believe this is to show that that this character is the real
RocknRolla.

Opening scene:

Costumes: Most of the characters are wearing very formal suits that look expensive, this is to show that they are wealthy and I personally see this as them being a proper gangster because they are well dressed, some of the other the gangsters that are lower down in the London crime hierarchy wear much more casual clothes like polo shirts, these items of clothing are less formal but still look like designer clothes.

Setting: The city of London, the buildings that the crook live in and are buying are expensive looking top of the range flats, this is to show that these particular gangsters are obviously very good at what they do because they have nice places to live in with very extravagant furniture.

Characters: The characters that we get introduced with early on are some layers and estate agents and also two of the main characters. The estate agents and layers are smug and very well dressed; they appear to be working for the top gangster in the city, while the two main characters who are called One Two and Mumbles are lesser gangst6ers and are dressed in much more formal cloths, it appears that they are looking for a piece of property that they can make money off.

Sound: The voice over and music are still continuing from the opening credits

Plot: What the start of the film shows is that the gangsters make money off of property development, this leads to competition and a lot of dirty play from the top of the hierarchy who plays dirty to make other people property his and make them owe him a lot of money. The first scene shows us how the main crook (Lenny) makes money off of most of the property by lying to other crooks and making it seem as if it there fault, this makes them owe Lenny a lot of money, the two gangsters that are on the receiving end of this are One Two and Mumbles.

Camera shots: At the beginning while the people are talking about London being the Capital of the world there are various shots of London’s most impressive buildings this enables the audience to really get a feel for where the film is set. Another example of different types of camera shots is when One Two and Mumbles are talking to two layers, the camera is angled up at the layers this gives them a certain superiority and power over One Two and Mumbles, I think this is to mainly show that basically the layers are a lot richer than both One Two and Mumbles, also in the same conversation very cleverly with One Two, Mumbles and layers while the camera is angled up at the layers when the camera is on One two and Mumbles the camera is angled down at what appears to be the exact opposite angle at what it was for the layers, I believe this is to show the complete opposite of what it shows for the layers, I.E they are not powerful, rich and are well below these two layers in the gangster hierarchy.

While watching the film the thriller genre is utilised in a number of ways. The main way is that the plot has never ending twists; this is good for a thriller as it keeps the audience guessing constantly and we never know what is going to happen until the film is actually over. There are also a few good fight scenes and one really good chase scene (on foot) this particular keeps the audience on the edge of their seat as the person chasing appears unstoppable as he keeps the chase going even after being shot numerous times, this leaves us wondering will the person being hunted, as it were, ever get away?

The narrative of this film is linear to the most part but has the occasional flash back. I think this worked very well as it only flashed back for really important information that we needed to know to fully understand the film, I feel this is good because although it kept the flow of the film quick and did not make it too complicated, it did in the flashback show us vital information, this worked well for this fast paced film.

Part V

The only real issue regarding social groups on this film is how women are represented, as the most common word used to describe women in this film is ‘tart’. I think they have chosen this for the film because it is a stereotypical view that male gangsters have for most women, they see them more as items then as actual people. This could be because this film is mainly intended for a male audience.
