Part i
The I am doing this case study on is the crime/comedy/thriller called RocknRolla. RocknRolla was directed by Guy Ritchie, the production company for this film was Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed on location in London and its release date in the United Kingdom was September the 5th 2008. The initial box office return for the movie was fantastic, with the return being around £1.5 million in its first six days, the film has done very well since then as its overall gross profit from the box office has been $25,728,089.
Part ii
After watching the film I believe that the target audience would mostly consist of males, I believe this in the way the film represents males and females, by this I mean nearly all the characters are males, and there is only one female character that really has any input into the storyline. Also the film features a lot of stereotypical language aimed at some of the female character an example that crops up quite a lot in the film is tart, also with the film is mainly about the lives of male gangsters in London, I think all of these factors contribute to making this film aimed at a male audience.
From the IMBD data base for reviews I found that this movie largely had a very good audience review here is one example of a positive review which I have picked at random, (excuse the spelling mistakes in it).

After some failures in his career as a director, Guy Ritchie is back with a fast paced, frenetic movie. A film about a Russian mobster orchestrates a crooked land deal, millions of dollars are up for grabs, and all of London?s criminal underworld wants in on the action. Everyone from a dangerous crime lord to a sexy accountant, a corrupt politician and down-on-their-luck petty thieves conspire, collude and collide with one another in an effort to get rich quick. The story is interesting and the plot is very well developed. Its a film with lots of action and adventure, it has also a very good amount of black humor, characteristic from Ritchie's movies, and full of twists and an unexpected ending. The direction from Ritchie is excellent, the first hour might be a little slow but from the second hour till the end the movie takes a very fast rhythm and the fast forwards and slow motions increases the intensity of the movie. The cast is amazing, Gerard Butler gives a formidable performance, Thandie Newton also very good, Tom Wilkinson flawless as always and the secondary roles from Toby Kebbell (Johnny Quid), Idris Elba (Mumbles) and Mark Strong (Archie) gave the movie a very good support. In conclusion, RocknRolla is an entertaining movie you will enjoy and that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
As you can see from that review it is very positive and says how the movie is very good at keeping you on the edge of your seat, this is always a good aspect of any type of thriller movie. What makes this review particularly good is that well over half of the people that read this and gave positive feedback to it, this shows that many people believed this film to be good.
Part iii
New technology has definitely helped in the way that a target audience can be informed of this film much quicker than they could have been in the past. The internet was very useful when looking up this film, websites like Wikipedia and IMBD had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast, the production company and further information that is relevant to this case study.
Part iv
The first thing that i am going to do for this section is type up the notes i made from the first 3 minutes of the film this includes the opening credits. These notes are on two separate parts, first of all the opening credits and then the first scene. (These notes are now constructed into what I hope is proper English and not the original note form they were in when i was taking the notes.)
Opening credits:
Music: For the opening the music is well and truly RocknRoll, this is good in my opinion as it fits in wit the title and sets the tempo for the rest of the film. The music good suggest that the movie is going to be fast paced, entertaining and will probably have drugs and sex in the film at some point.
Colours: The two colours that feature in the title sequence are black and gold, these colours make each other stand out are and were useful when trying to show off a particular character trait. I noted that some particularly one of the character was almost fully shaded in black with only is rings and sunglasses in gold, I think this was to show that this particular character was the really bad one out of all the gangsters.
Sound: There is a voice over from a person with a real London accent, the voice over is from one of the gangsters, he has a proper London accent and seems to be very relaxed and self assured. The person who is talking describes to us what a real RocknRolla is, this suggest that he possibly sees himself as a real RocknRolla or possibly knows at least one real RocknRolla.
Transitions: The opening credits go through each of the characters very quickly without saying
who they are we get a clear picture of what they look like (the opening credits are animated). The transitions are very sharp and quick so we get through almost the whole cast in just a minute, between some of the transitions there is the sound of a gun clicking; I think this was only on one character though, and I believe this is to show that that this character is the real
RocknRolla.
Opening scene:
Costumes: Most of the characters are wearing very formal suits that look expensive, this is to show that they are wealthy and I personally see this as them being a proper gangster because they are well dressed, some of the other the gangsters that are lower down in the London crime hierarchy wear much more casual clothes like polo shirts, these items of clothing are less formal but still look like designer clothes.
Setting: The city of London, the buildings that the crook live in and are buying are expensive looking top of the range flats, this is to show that these particular gangsters are obviously very good at what they do because they have nice places to live in with very extravagant furniture.
Characters: The characters that we get introduced with early on are some layers and estate agents and also two of the main characters. The estate agents and layers are smug and very well dressed; they appear to be working for the top gangster in the city, while the two main characters who are called One Two and Mumbles are lesser gangst6ers and are dressed in much more formal cloths, it appears that they are looking for a piece of property that they can make money off.
Sound: The voice over and music are still continuing from the opening credits
Plot: What the start of the film shows is that the gangsters make money off of property development, this leads to competition and a lot of dirty play from the top of the hierarchy who plays dirty to make other people property his and make them owe him a lot of money. The first scene shows us how the main crook (Lenny) makes money off of most of the property by lying to other crooks and making it seem as if it there fault, this makes them owe Lenny a lot of money, the two gangsters that are on the receiving end of this are One Two and Mumbles.
Camera shots: At the beginning while the people are talking about London being the Capital of the world there are various shots of London’s most impressive buildings this enables the audience to really get a feel for where the film is set. Another example of different types of camera shots is when One Two and Mumbles are talking to two layers, the camera is angled up at the layers this gives them a certain superiority and power over One Two and Mumbles, I think this is to mainly show that basically the layers are a lot richer than both One Two and Mumbles, also in the same conversation very cleverly with One Two, Mumbles and layers while the camera is angled up at the layers when the camera is on One two and Mumbles the camera is angled down at what appears to be the exact opposite angle at what it was for the layers, I believe this is to show the complete opposite of what it shows for the layers, I.E they are not powerful, rich and are well below these two layers in the gangster hierarchy.
While watching the film the thriller genre is utilised in a number of ways. The main way is that the plot has never ending twists; this is good for a thriller as it keeps the audience guessing constantly and we never know what is going to happen until the film is actually over. There are also a few good fight scenes and one really good chase scene (on foot) this particular keeps the audience on the edge of their seat as the person chasing appears unstoppable as he keeps the chase going even after being shot numerous times, this leaves us wondering will the person being hunted, as it were, ever get away?
The narrative of this film is linear to the most part but has the occasional flash back. I think this worked very well as it only flashed back for really important information that we needed to know to fully understand the film, I feel this is good because although it kept the flow of the film quick and did not make it too complicated, it did in the flashback show us vital information, this worked well for this fast paced film.
Part V
The only real issue regarding social groups on this film is how women are represented, as the most common word used to describe women in this film is ‘tart’. I think they have chosen this for the film because it is a stereotypical view that male gangsters have for most women, they see them more as items then as actual people. This could be because this film is mainly intended for a male audience.
