Sound track

Sound track
For our opening credits we as a group have decided a track called ‘Eerie Angel’. This song I believe has the perfect style for the beginning of a horror thriller. It is eerie and seems to me a good tension builder; it will be perfect as it gets the adrenaline pumping before the movie has even started.
Our opening scene is going to be 100% digetic sound hopefully, (altough we are thinking of possibly putting in some non-digetic sounds for example a heartbeat), I think this is a good idea as it will really give the viewer a feel of what it will be like to be in our main characters shoes.
For the scene where the main character wakes up we have decided to go with a song entitled ‘If Only You Knew’ this song is very calming and cheerful. I feel that this will work for the so called morning sequence because it is cheery and uplifting, and I think this will connote a new day a new start. Also the first scene may have the same music from the opening credits, this is becuase it would link in well and also becuase the song 'Eerie angel' seems like it would be a good tension builder.
Results of Questions areas for thriller research
Chart: 1
What is you favourite aspect of a thriller film?
From the result we can tell that when making our opening to our film we are going to have to pay particular attention to the music we use, as it seems that it is one of the most important things in a thriller movie.
Chart: 2
What type of thriller do people prefer?
From the results it seems that that most popular type of thriller film is indeed a Horror one, this is good as we planned to make a Horror thriller for our opening film sequence.

Graphs 3-6
We then asked what characters they would associate with these colours: Green, Red, White and Green.
Here is the graph for the results on the colour Black.
Well that was a very conclusive graph as everyone we asked associated the colour black with a bad guy. We remember this when we are thinking u p a bad character.
Here is the graph for the results on the colour red.
This graph suggests that the colour red should represent something bad or evil in our opening to our film, since every result as something to do with bad or evil aspects.

Here is the graph for the results on the colour white.
As you can see the majority of the people we asked believed the colour white should represent a good guy, a very small percentage suggest that maybe the colour white should represent a innocent character.
Here is the graph for the results on the colour green.
From the graph we can tell that there is a divided opinion for the colour green, but from that graph it seems that green should represent a good guy.

Character profiles for media thriller film

Characters:

Jessica Bradshaw:
Jessica’s family used to live in the city. About a year prior the when the film is beings set her family moved to this lovely country house, this seemed very odd to Jessica as they were very settled in the City but her parents have insisted that they only moved to start a new life with the ‘friendly’ people in the county, still Jessica has slightly resented her parents ever since the move. Living in the country has not worked for her as thus far, it is just a far cry from her city life style. Other kids at her new school have never taken a great shining to her; this in itself does not bother her it is more the fact that they have never given her the chance.

Jessica is a girl who is used to getting what she wants, she is a likable characters, and is quite she will not be intimidated and will not fall in to peer pressure, so basically a typical teenage girl, sure of herself likable and not afraid to put her opinions.

Hooded figure without a name (the bad guy):
The so called hooded figure is a very shady and mysterious character; we meet him early on in the film while he is what looks like following Jessica.

Little is know about this man, but rumours have been spreading around that they are a group that has lived in the area around the house for generations; some say they are called The Cult of The Black Crow. Many people say that the stories surrounding this group of people are not true, but this man would like to prove otherwise…

Martin and Molly Bradshaw
Martin and Molly Bradshaw are the parents of Jessica. The two of the were both born and raised in London. They met in London and lived in a city of some description for the majority for the life, but when they saw that a lovely country house was for sale they could not resist, although this seems to have caused a few problems with their daughter.

Notes on the departed and Vacancy

Notes on the departed and Vacancy

Vacancy
Music: When the titles are up at the beginning the music is frantic to show that this movie is possibly going to be quite intense. When the movie starts the music is a bit calm and very quiet this is to show that they are alone, it really emphasises that they are alone in the dark, just the two of them, but the big question is are they really alone of is someone watching them? While they were in the dark we could hear digetic sounds, and all we could hear was the car creatures of the nights like owls to really hit home the fact that they are alone.

Setting: We can tell that the car is from California which would suggest that the car is from California or they are in California. It is night and there are no cars or buildings anywhere all that we can see is a single car, this makes us jump to the conclusion that they are alone. Eventually they come to a small gas station, which appears to be in the middle of nowhere, which asks the question why is it there?

Characters: The two characters that we first see are a man and a woman together in the car. Whenever they talk they end up arguing about something that is very petty. This led me to the conclusion that they are or were possibly married. At this point in time though they are not getting on, and are possibly only together in the car because they have to be. The lost character that we see is a weird guy that makes the other to characters jump by coming up to there car.

Narrative: They are two people all alone, in the dark, and are lost; they come to a small gas station and meet this weird gas station manager….

The Departed
Music: The music for the first scene is the rolling stones, to show that this main character is funky and in control of what he is doing, I think it is also to show that this man is confident and sure of himself. Also there is a voice over of the main protagonist, he has a classic American gangsters voice.

Setting: The setting is the city, we can see fights corruption law breaking, this is to show that this movie is set in a rough city and will be quite intense.

Characters: The first character we see is supposedly the main protagonist, he is confident. He has men that he controls. When he speaks to people they listen and do not argue back, this is a show of respect to him, this shows he is an important person and people are almost forced to listen to him. The other character we see is a young kid, he is nervous but the main protagonist looks after him and buys him stuff, which suggest this kid to be important to him, and then we are taken forward in time to see the kid grows up to be in a police force, which is interesting because the person that looked after him and bought him stuff was a gangster, maybe he is there because the main protaginst wants him there for one of his plans for crime…

Narrative: A young kid is taken under the wing of a crime lord and ends up in the police force probably to help the main protagonist do some sort of crime.

Notes on lecture

Notes on lecture before summers town.

British films are normally very low budget, they are not normally big blockbuster, normally filmed on a lower budget than American films, and most importantly British films always try to capture the average person, they do this to try and connect the character to the audience, this is relating the audience to the film by putting the main character in situations an average person could find themselves in everyday. You will hardly see a British film that is about a out of this world heroic character, who has to save this world on his own.

Summers town was filmed by Euro star, which is the train that goes from England to France, this was probably good publicity for them because Euro star managed to put across there product a couple of times in the film. British films are normally low budget affairs compared to there American counterparts. This is probably a reason behind why British films are not well renowned for there amazing special effects when it comes to blowing things up.

somers Twon questions

Somers town questions

Question 4 How would you categories this film in terms of genre? Does it remind you of any other films you have seen?
For categorising it there is one genre that it defiantly has characteristics of I would think that this genre is comedy. Also there is a touch of drama, an example of this is the beginning of the film where the characters the two main characters are alone with no friends in new place, also the face that Tomo gets mugged early on in the film adds to the drama effect, so I would categorise this as Comedy/Drama.
As for films it reminds, no film in particular springs to mind but it reminds me of films, where the two main characters are enemies then turn into great friends. Kind of buddy movie, but still a drama.
Question 5 What do you think is the films appeal for audiences?
The appeal would be to show audiences what it is like for young people moving to London and starting a fresh, because that can’t be easy, it is also kind of a feel good movie, by this I mean towards the end it becomes a lot about how everyone gets closer together. Also the comedy appeal although this film is not a comedy it certainly has some Comedy like parts in the film. The appeal of Summers town being shot in black and white, would also have an appeal to certain audiences as it would remind them of the classic films that were filmed in black and white.
Question 6 As well as being in black and white, the film is subtitled during the conversations in Polish between Marek and his father; there are also sections in French. In what ways do these factors affect your response to the film; the situation and characters?
Personally I prefer film in black and white, like if Marek and his father spoke perfect English with a cockney accent it would make it seem less realistic, furthermore I am glad they decided to use that instead of dubbing, personally I believe dubbing is the worst thing ever to be included in films, well that is what I think. When directors use Poles speaking Polish or the French speaking French etc , I think it is a nice personal touch to get the character speaking there native tongue as it lets the viewer see how the other nationalities speak and help us relate to the characters more.

Question 8 To what extent do you think the audience is expected to be ‘comfotable’ with this portrait of two teenagers?
I am sure not everyone would be particularly comfortable with one certain scene with Tomo seeing to his personal needs, although i am sure many people found this shocking image funny. Teenagers these days tend to drink so personally I would think that the scene with them drinking would not make anyone particularly uncomfortable. More importantly the fact that Tomo is on young and is on the streets might cause some shock to teenagers watching this film, and shows them that what they have at home could be taken for granted.
Question 9 A sign on the estate reads ‘children playing on these grounds is prohibited’. IN what different ways do Tomo and Marek seek to amuse themselves within this environment? Do you think the film encourages us to judge any of their actions
Most of the time they are looking of ways to impress the French waitress, for example when they find the wheelchair, then use the wheelchair so they can become almost a taxi service for her. The audience could judge Tomo on his actions very early on in the film, possibly pointing him out as a bit of a loveable rouge and a trouble maker early on in the film Tomo is a trouble maker, he is forgiven because there is not many things to do where they are, especially on the estate.
Question 10 What message of childhood adolescence do you, or could you, take away from the film?
One thing that i took away from the film is that friendship can be important especially in big cities such as London, as when Tomo was on his own he got mugged straight away because he was on his own with no one else to protect him. Also the importance of having fun in your adolescence is highlighted in the film.
Question 11 Do your reactions towards the boys change at different pionts in the film? Which moments in particular?a) Encourage you to sympathise with the boys:
I think because both boys are new to London and are young encourages the audience to sympathise with them all the way through the film. We feel sorry for them being all alone in an intimidating city such as London.
b) Make you unsympathetic towards them:
When they steal cloths and it turns out to be woman’s clothing, i believe that it serves Tomo right as he stole the cloths and then has to wear them because he can’t wear his old set of cloths thus making him look very silly.
Question 12 Some of the other characters include marek’s father, Mariusz, Graham the cockney neighbour, and a French waitress, maria. To what extent would you agree that Meadows is playing with stereotypes in his representation of these characters?
Well with Graham, the stereotype is cockney, he loves football (especially Arsenal) is quite cheeky, has a friendly way of how he deals with things, like business, and is always looking for a get rich quick scheme. Maria is what British people like to think of French woman, she is very pretty very friendly and at the beginning of the film she is mysterious to the audience. Mariusz, is a typical Polish person in Britain: he is very good at his job, enthusiastic and his employers greatly respect him, he tries hard at his job which is why he was able to move to England. He is also big and strong which used to be the typical stereotype of someone from Eastern Europe.

Black and white films
1. Why do you think a modern director would choose to produce a film in blackk and white rather than colour? What effects might they be hoping to achieve?

A director may have chosen to use black and white, for a number of reasons.
They could use it to take the emphasis away from what things look like and make the viewer think more about the characters and how what the characters are actually saying this would also mean that the viewer would find it easier to concentrate on the characters movement rather than colourful distracting images. Much more likely is that classic film were filmed in black and white, so filming in black and white might make a viewer link the movie to classic titles, this would increase the appeal of the movie.

Once upon a time in the west

Once Upon a Time in The West.

Once upon a time in the west is a western film that comes under the genre of thriller, sub genre western, a thriller movie is a movie that’s purpose is to quite simply thrill the audience by either, frightening, exciting or catching the audience by surprise.
The film uses a key element in its build up of tension right at the beginning, the technique used is the use of digetic sound.
Digetic sound is the sound that is natural to the film. By this it means the sounds that was captured when it was being filmed; an example of this is actors voices or the.
As well as digetic sound there are non-digetic sounds: this is sounds that5 is not natural to the film. Sounds that have been edited in after the filming process; like background music which has been put in and voice over’s.
As i was saying the use of digetic sound in the beginning of once upon a time in the west is very good at building up tension. It starts with a weedy old man (that does not look like he can protect himself) chalk being used on a chalk boar, this sound at the best of times is eerie and mike my skin crawl, this start made me think the start of this film may well be quite fast paced. Also there is the sound of a lot of wind, this gives the location the impression of being quite baron and open.
Also the old styled western door creaks open very slowly, this is to build up tension and suspense to keep the audience wondering, who is on the other side of the door? We get the answer very shortly after with a very bulky intimidating looking cowboy enters the door, the malice in his eyes suggests that possible the weedy old train conductor is in for a bit of trouble. The cowboy who already looks indimidating enough, then starts to walk with big long strides, the director could of used this to show the confidence, strength of this cowboy.
The camera pans around and very slowly and it turns out that there is more than just one cowboy there are three that all look equally as intimidating, with big lumbering strides coming down on the old man from what appears to be all sides, we are lead to believe that he has no hope.
I have yet to see the rest f the film, but if the rest isa as good as this opening scence i am sure it will be worth watching.

The beginning sequence for no country for old men

The film begins with an establishing shot of a deserted view of a desert like area that does not have an abundance of vegetation; this is to show that possibly that it is a peaceful place, where they are not over used to witnesing of being invlovled in crime. While on this view you can hear a radio show about a murder, which makes the audience think this place is possible not as peaceful as it first seemed.

After this scene it cuts to a a mid shot of a car beginning pulled over by a cop car and put in custody, this guy seems very shady, while the police officer looks quite confident. Next it cuts to a shot whch is of the police officer having a phone call. This man is custody who looks like a bit of a psychopath (which leas the audience to believe that he is the villain of the movie), steps up and walks very slowly to the police officer, puts his cuffs around the police officer throat and starts to throttle him, the camera flashes to those to on the floor and shows both the factual reaction of both men while this is happening, the shots move the audience because it shows the police officer has little chance and his fight for survival is in vien. After the police officer his dead on the floor, they us a point of view shot of the psycho washing his hands to get rid of the blood.

The person then takes over the police car and pulls over another man, ask him to get out of the car and puts some sort of device, that had been introduced to us, to the mans head it then shots off some sort of surprised air puts a whole in the mans head and kills him, while the psycho goes off into the car of the man he has just killed car and drives away.

The next shot is of a a sniper scope zoomed on to a dear, the camera then suddenly cuts the face of the man who is actually aiming the gun, the sniper shot is an example of a point of view shot, because of this the audience do not yet know whether this guy is a good guy or a bad guy.
This shot is effective because it shows it shows us the concentration of him, after shooting the bullet you hear the sound of the shell hitting the floor, this is effective because it makes the audience very aware of his surrounding, because the only over things that the audience can hear is his breath and the wind this is all digetic sound and adds a sense of realism.

The target audince for our short coming opening sequence would greatly appriciate some of the camera shots in this opening sequence such as the perspective shot which i have just talked about.

That was the opening of No Country for Old Men, analysis of the rest of the movie is for another time…..

Meida
Thriller movies can characterized as fast pacing movies with frequent action, and resourceful heroes
who must thwart the plans of more-powerful and better-equipped villains. Basically a Thrillers objective is to quite simply thrill the audience.

Examples of Thriller movies
No country for old men ( I have seen this movie and really enjoyed it)
Jaws
The Dark night ( I have seen this movie and really enjoyed it)
The God Father trilogy( I have seen this movie and really enjoyed it)

What i learned from final express (mac version)

I learned that first of all Apple Mac computers are more difficult on premier than P.C, but the complexity of this program could possible mean that the Mac version has more possibilities.

One of the key things I learned was the shortcuts to do certain things I.E play the current selected clip as well has how to rewind it fast foreword.

There are defiantly a lot more things to learn on premiere but it is a work in progress and I am sure I will be a pro in no time.

On my second time on the mac version of final express, i found out more about the actual layout on of the program the most notab;e thing is that there are two windows side by side that play your clips of film, the first one (on the left) is the one that the current single clip of film you are looking at, while the window on the right shows the whole of the project (all of the clips put together).

On Firday we masterd uploading our clips of film, mostly because we were uploading our film clips from our camara for a bit over an hour.

Very First blog

This is a very exicting time for me, enjoy!
I will remember this as the day that I set up my very first blog.
